What is E-E-A-T?

What is E-E-A-T, in one sentence?

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness: the criteria Google’s quality raters use to judge whether content and its publisher can be relied on, with trust at the centre.

The four elements

  • Experience: first-hand knowledge of the subject, such as having used the product or done the work.
  • Expertise: the skill and knowledge to write about it accurately.
  • Authoritativeness: being recognised as a go-to source by others in the field.
  • Trustworthiness: accurate, honest, transparent and safe. Google describes trust as the most important element.

Is E-E-A-T a ranking factor?

Not directly. It is a framework used by Google’s human quality raters to assess results, and Google’s ranking systems aim to reward content that shows these qualities. In practice you cannot “add E-E-A-T” with a tag; you demonstrate it through the content and the site around it.

Why it matters most for sensitive topics

Pages that could affect health, finances or legal position, which Google calls Your Money or Your Life topics, face the highest bar. A dentist, solicitor or financial adviser needs clear evidence of qualifications and accountability.

How to show E-E-A-T on your site

  • Name authors and reviewers, with a short biography and relevant qualifications.
  • Show real experience: case studies with measured results, photos of your own work, specific details only a practitioner would know.
  • Be transparent about who you are: registered company details, address, contact page and policies.
  • Cite reliable sources and keep pages up to date.
  • Earn independent signals: genuine reviews, press coverage and mentions from respected organisations in your field.

How Starboost handles it

We build E-E-A-T into content and site structure, for example author pages, structured data, published case studies and a steady flow of genuine reviews, and we measure the effect on enquiries rather than on scores. See our local SEO and GEO work.

Frequently asked questions

What does the extra E for Experience add?
Google added Experience in December 2022 to recognise first-hand knowledge, such as someone who has actually used a product or carried out a service, alongside expertise learned from study.
Does E-E-A-T affect AI search visibility?
Indirectly. AI assistants tend to cite sources that look authoritative and consistent across the web, so the same signals that support E-E-A-T also help brands get cited.

How Starboost applies this for clients

We review your site for the trust and expertise signals that both Google and AI assistants look for, then fix the gaps in priority order.
