What is llms.txt?

What goes in the file

• A title and a one-paragraph description of the organisation
• Sections of links to key pages, each with a short note on what it covers
• Optionally, a longer llms-full.txt with the content itself in clean Markdown

What it does and does not do

llms.txt is a proposal, not a standard that all AI companies have committed to following, and Google has said it does not use it for ranking. Treat it as a low-cost way to make your site easier to read for tools that choose to use it, not as a ranking lever. It does not replace crawlability, good content or structured data.

How to write a useful one

1. State plainly who you are, what you do and where you operate.
2. List your most important service, pricing and contact pages with one line each.
3. Keep the facts consistent with your Google Business Profile and website.
4. Update it when services, prices or contact details change.

Do not confuse it with robots.txt

robots.txt tells crawlers what they may access. llms.txt describes what is worth reading. If AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot are blocked in robots.txt, a perfect llms.txt will not help. Allowing them is the first step of any GEO project.
