What is the Google local pack?

What is the local pack, in one sentence?

The local pack (also called the map pack or 3-pack) is the block Google shows at the top of local searches such as “dentist in Leeds” or “plumber near me”, made up of a map and three businesses taken from Google Business Profile listings.

How the local pack appears

When Google decides a search deserves a nearby answer, it places a map and three businesses above or among the organic results, with their star rating, number of reviews, opening hours and buttons to call or get directions. A link lets the searcher expand the list. These listings come from Google Business Profile, the free tool for managing a business listing.

Why it matters

For a clinic, restaurant, tradesperson or shop that depends on a defined catchment area, the local pack is often the first thing a customer sees. They see your reviews, phone number and address before they ever visit your website, so being in it or not can change the number of calls and visits you receive.

The three local ranking factors

Google explains that local results are ranked on three factors.

  • Relevance: how well your listing matches the search (categories, services, description).
  • Distance: how far the searcher, or the place they searched for, is from your business. This is why two people rarely see exactly the same results.
  • Prominence: how well known you are, based on reviews (quantity, rating, recency), mentions, links and directory presence.

Google also states that you cannot pay to improve your organic local ranking.

How to improve your presence in the local pack

  • Claim and complete your listing: the most precise primary category, secondary categories, accurate opening hours, services, description and real photos.
  • Keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere, as explained in our guide to NAP and local citations.
  • Collect reviews regularly and reply to every one, as part of a steady reputation management routine.
  • Publish posts and keep photos, products and services up to date.
  • Build one page per service and per area served on your website, consistent with your listing.

Common mistakes include adding keywords to the business name (against Google’s guidelines and a frequent cause of suspension), using a virtual or fake address, buying reviews, or leaving the listing unattended for months.

How to track progress

Your listing reports interactions such as calls, direction requests and website clicks. Rankings in the pack change with the searcher’s location, so serious tracking is done point by point around the business rather than from a single spot.

How Starboost handles it

Local SEO is our core work: listing audit, category and service choices, posts, review replies and consistency between listing, website and directories. We never promise a position, because the local pack depends on factors nobody controls, such as distance and competition. See our local SEO agency page for the approach.

Frequently asked questions

How many businesses does the local pack show?
The classic local pack shows three businesses below the map, with a link to see more. The layout varies by search, device and the searcher’s location, which is why results differ from person to person.
Can you pay to appear in the local pack?
Not for the organic part: Google says you cannot pay to improve your organic local ranking. Paid local ads exist but are labelled separately. Organic work is done on the listing, reviews, consistent information and your website.
Do I need a shop to appear in the local pack?
You need a business that Google accepts as eligible, either with a storefront customers visit or a service area business that travels to customers. Rules are set out in Google’s Business Profile guidelines.

How Starboost applies this for clients

We start from an audit of your Google listing and your local competitors to identify what keeps you out of the local pack, then act in priority order on the listing, the reviews and your website.
