Search intent (or user intent) is the underlying goal of a search query: to learn something, to find a particular site, to compare options, or to buy or contact someone.
| Type | What the searcher wants | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Informational | To learn or understand | “what is a local pack” |
| Navigational | To reach a specific site or place | “Starboost contact” |
| Commercial investigation | To compare before choosing | “best local SEO agency” |
| Transactional or local | To act: buy, book, call, visit | “emergency plumber Bristol” |
Google tries to show the type of page that satisfies the search. If searchers for “dentist Manchester” want a local list with reviews and directions, a long blog post will not rank however well it is written. Matching intent comes before optimising keywords.
We map every target keyword to its intent before writing or changing a page, so content, listing and calls to action all point at the same goal. See our local SEO agency approach.
We check whether your key pages match the intent behind the searches that matter to your business.
